March 8th

This is Kay Williamsburg. In early 2005, I sat in my high-school-freshman biology class, doodling randomly- I sketched a frizzy-haired girl who wore a big dress. In later 2005- sitting instead in a chemistry class as a sophomore in high school- I gave her a bunch of homies, a name, and an adventure; so started the first original story that I’d ever written! Many years passed and as I became more educated I viewed the story itself more and more as shallow and …haha, written by a dumb 15-year-old; but, somehow maintained an oddly friendship-like sort of connection with Kay and her friends. In the summer of 2011, I decided to re-vamp the story and use the big words that I learned in college and give Kay a chance at a new adventure.

In 2005 and in 2012, Kay served as a cheerful and encouraging friend who existed to vanquish every speck of sadness in the world that she could possibly manage to uncover. Some pretty gnarly stuff happened to her in her youth, but, from it, she learned that the most fulfilling life is led by the person who gives and gives and gives and finds love in the smallest and stupidest things. Picking fights is for stuck-up lameos. Bullying and putting people down are for stuck-up lameos. Being selfish is for stuck-up lameos. Getting offended is for stuck-up lameos. Anyone who does anything other than spread positive energy is a stuck-up lameo. I think that I developed Kay, wishing that I had as strong a heart as she has, sometimes. Today was a fairly bad day for me… I realized that the weight of the stress of applying for jobs is starting to take a toll. Then, I realized… what would Kay do? She would throw all of the negativity into the trash and then draw a thousand hearts and then bake a cupcake and then giggle at the fact that her boyfriend’s hands have fuzzy hair on them.

Kay isn’t the smartest or most graceful of girls… but, she does have the warmest heart that any of her little homies ever have the privilege of coming in contact with. I didn’t draw her for the first time on March 8th, 2005 (I must have drawn her for the first time sometime in January of 2005), but, March 8th, 2009 remains the best day of my life… I decided in the summer of 2011 that it’d be appropriate to assign the best calendar day of my life to the happiest girl in the world as a birthday. As far as Kay is concerned, she was born on March 8th, 1992.

So, happy 20th birthday, sunshine!
